FAQs

What does it mean that it's compounded?

The FDA defines drug compounding as the process of combining, mixing or altering ingredients to create a medication tailored to the needs of an individual patient. We use a commercially available medication with a liquid base specially formulated to deliver medications like semaglutide through the oral mucosa.

What does sublingual mean?

It means under the tongue. CSS is a liquid medication that you will take and hold under your tongue for at least 90 seconds every day and then swallow. It is absorbed through the oral mucosa and the longer it is in contact with that surface, the better.

How much does it cost?

It will vary depending on the strength and dose you and your prescriber decide is best for you.

Will my insurance cover compounded sublingual semaglutide?

We do not bill insurance for compounded medications.

Does it require a prescription?

It utilizes a prescription medication so yes, it does require a prescription. See list of prescribers here.

How do I get it?

Since it does require a prescription, see our list of prescribers that are educated on CSS, schedule an appointment with them. If together, you decide it is a good choice for you, they will write it for you. Bring it to the Town & Country Drug and we will get it ready for you.

What's the difference between CSS and Ozempic?

The active ingredient in both is semaglutide. Ozempic is a manufactured medication that is delivers semaglutide in an injection. CSS is compounded and delivers the medication sublingually. CSS doesn’t have to be refrigerated, isn’t facing the shortages that Ozempic and the like are and doesn’t involve a needle.
